A wealthy mayor of Halsenbach named Surges, had the chapel built in memory of his son Heribert, who died of tuberculosis at the age of 26. The windows show the son's namesake and St. Sophia, the namesake of the mayor's wife and the landowner and builder. The chapel was built in 1930 with the help of the Monnerjahn company. It is the only chapel in the diocese of Trier dedicated to St. Heribert.
