Kapellchen am Heilbrünnchen
56281 Emmelshausen
The healing fountain with the Lady Chapel. Here you can simply rest and listen to the murmur of the ferruginous spring. According to legend, the Scottish king's son Wendelinus roamed the countryside as a shepherd with his flock. One evening, as he drove his sheep through the valley, he found no watering hole. Without hesitation, trusting in God's help, he thrust his staff into the meadow and immediately a spring gushed forth. A wayside shrine with the statue of St. Wendelin was then built on this spot. The spring was often chosen by the sick, the water was said to have a healing effect on eye diseases. After the citizens of Basselscheid replaced the wayside shrine with a small chapel between 1850 and 1860, the number of pilgrims increased steadily. During the First World War, a person seeking help donated a statue of the Virgin Mary and veneration took a back seat in favor of the Mother of God. Today, when people in Emmelshausen speak of the "Heilbrünnchen", they are superficially referring to a second spring. The mineral spring below the chapel is one of the numerous mineral springs in the Hunsrück.
